Kerry, Dingle, and the Southwest

Kerry is the scenery you already have in your head about Ireland. Mountains dropping into lakes, roads carved along cliff edges, and sheep crossing the road at their leisure. It is the most photographed part of Ireland and it still exceeds the photographs.

what to see in kerry

The Ring of Kerry

A 179 kilometre loop around the Iveragh Peninsula taking in Killarney National Park, Ladies View, Molls Gap, Sneem, Waterville and Killorglin. Coach traffic runs it in one direction, which is exactly why a private driver-guide is worth it: we run it the other way and stop where the coaches cannot.

The Dingle Peninsula and Slea Head Drive

Slea Head Drive is thirty miles of coastal road with beehive huts, film locations, an Irish speaking region and views west to the Blasket Islands. Dingle town itself is small, colourful and full of good food and better music.

Kerry Tours, Towns, and Attractions
  • Killarney National Park, Muckross House and the lakes
  • Gap of Dunloe, best on foot or by pony trap
  • Skellig Michael, the monastic island, weather permitting and only in season
  • Kenmare, a genuinely lovely town and a quieter base than Killarney
  • Valentia Island and the Kerry Cliffs, less crowded than Moher and nearly as dramatic

THE MOST COMMON
QUESTIONS

Is the Ring of Kerry or the Dingle Peninsula better?

The Ring of Kerry is longer, more famous and more varied. Dingle is shorter, wilder and, for many of our guests, more memorable. With a full day you can do one properly. With two days, do both and let us handle all the logistics.

How long does the Ring of Kerry take?

Around nine hours as a private tour, including stops. Driving it without stopping takes about four, which would rather defeat the purpose.

How far is Kerry from Dublin?

Roughly four hours by road, so we recommend at least one night in the region rather than attempting it as a day trip from Dublin.

When is the best time to visit Kerry?

May, June and September for daylight and manageable crowds. Skellig Michael landings run only in summer and are weather dependent.
